The Centre for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG) has released a statement following confirmation by Bikita Minerals of two separate deaths involving personnel working at its operations during the weekend of 6–7 June 2026.



According to the company's statement, a dump truck operator employed by a contractor died following an incident at a waste dump site, while a security guard employed by an independent security services provider was found unresponsive while on duty in a separate and unrelated incident.



CNRG extends its sincere condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of the deceased.



At the same time, these tragic incidents highlight the importance of maintaining the highest occupational health and safety standards across Zimbabwe's rapidly growing mining sector. Workers have raised concerns regarding safety conditions at the mine, and these concerns deserve serious attention and independent verification.



CNRG is calling for:

✔️ A transparent and independent investigation into the fatal workplace accident;

✔️ A comprehensive occupational health and safety audit of mining operations;

✔️ Enhanced oversight by relevant regulatory authorities;

✔️ Greater transparency and engagement on worker safety issues.



As Zimbabwe strengthens its position in global lithium supply chains, respect for workers' rights, safety, and wellbeing must remain central to the industry's development. Sustainable mining is not only about minerals and investment—it is also about protecting human life and dignity.
