OBITUARY: LEST WE FORGET THE VOICE OF THE WORKER
In Loving Memory of Comrade Henry Tarumbira
A Pillar of the Zimbabwean Labor Movement
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that the Zimbabwean labor community acknowledges the passing of a dedicated champion of workers' rights, Comrade Henry Tarumbira, who transitioned on May 23, 2026.
As announced by the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) Cde Tarumbira’s departure marks the end of an era of steadfast and passionate union activism. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the General Secretary of the National Union of the Metal and Allied Industries in Zimbabwe (NUMAIZ).
A Lifetime of Dedication to the Working Class
Cde Tarumbira’s life was intricately woven into the fabric of Zimbabwe’s trade unionism. He devoted his career to amplifying the voices of the ordinary worker, moving through the ranks with humility and unyielding resolve.
Early Leadership: He initially served with distinction as the General Secretary of the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Workers Union of Zimbabwe.
The Birth of NUMAIZ: In 2013, recognizing the strength in solidarity, he played a central role in merging his union with ZMEAWU to form NUMAIZ, subsequently stepping in as its General Secretary to guide the newly unified body.
National Influence: Beyond his sector, his leadership acumen was utilized nationally through his service as a ZCTU General Council member.
A Cheerful Activist and Lasting Legacy
Cde Tarumbira will be remembered not just for his strategic mind, but for his vibrant spirit. As highlighted by ZCTU Secretary General Tirivanhu Marimo, he was a "very cheerful and active trade union activist" whose lively participation in national trade union discourse directly helped shape impactful outcomes for thousands of Zimbabwean workers.
His untimely passing is a monumental blow to NUMAIZ, the ZCTU family, and the broader labor movement across the region. He leaves behind a legacy of unity, resilience, and a reminder that the fight for fair labor is a noble calling.
