THE local unit, ZWG currency inflation rate has receded to -0, 2% with strong indications that the yearly inflation rate, which is still double digit, will follow suit up to year end, Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) has reported.
The latest data from the statistics agency shows that the ZWG has sustained a record stability against the greenback since September 2024 when it last took a dip.
“The ZWG month-on-month inflation rate was – 0, 2% in September 2025, shedding 0.6% on the August 2025 rate of 0.4% . This means that prices as measured by the all items ZWG CPI, decreased by an average of -0.2 percent from August 2025 to September 2025,” said Zimstat.
However, the benefits to be felt by the country’s workers are minimal due to the fact that many are still earning very little in ZWG terms.
The month-on-month inflation rate is given by the percentage change in the price index of the reference month compared with the index of the previous month.
The ZWG month-on-month Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages inflation rate was 0.2 percent in September 2025, gaining 0.3 percentage points on the August 2025 rate of -0.1 percent. The September 2025 ZWG month-on-month non-food inflation rate was -0.5 percent shedding 1.1 percentage points on the August 2025 rate of 0.6 percent.
“The ZWG year-on-year inflation rate (annual percentage change) for the month of September 2025 as measured by the all-items ZWG Consumer Price Index (CPI), was 82, 7% meaning that prices as measured by the all items ZWG CPI, increased by an average of 82, 7%,” the stats agency said.
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe currently maintains a tight monetary policy stance to protect the stability of the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency, which was introduced in April 2024.The current policy maintains a high bank policy rate to block speculative borrowing as well as to anchor inflation and exchange rate expectations.
Zimstat also reported that the USD month-on-month inflation rate for September 2025 remained unchanged at the previous month’s rate of zero percent. The US$ year-on-year inflation rate (annual percentage change) for the month of September 2025 as measured by the all-items USD Consumer Price Index (CPI), was 13.4 percent.
During the period, the Food Poverty Line (FPL) for one person in September 2025 was ZWG 877.03 implying that the minimum needs basket cost that much per person in September 2025.
The Total Consumption Poverty Line (TCPL) for one person was ZWG 1,292.80 in September 2025. This means that an individual required that much to purchase both non-food and food items as at September 2025 in order not to be deemed poor.
